Located in a semi-desert of steppe on banks the Syr Darya River, Kyzylorda was the capital of Soviet Kazakhstan before it was moved to Almaty. It is a charming and culturally diverse city with a population that consists of Kazakhs, Russians, Uzbeks, Koreans and Germans amongst others. The main highlights of the city are the Memorial complex in honour of Korkyt Ata, a philosopher, poet, musician and healer who invented the kobyz, (a traditional Kazakh stringed instrument) the Aitbai Mosque, built in 1878 and of great historical interest, the Historical Museum established in 1939 and Temple of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, the only Orthodox church in Kyzylorda, consecrated in 1855.
