  • Thick Fog at the Airport of Almaty City Caused Large-Scale Delay of Flights

    09 February 2007

Thick fog at Almaty Airport, affected a total of 58 Air Astana flights from 7am on the 8 February. As a consequence of the unfavorable weather conditions approximately 3500 passengers were stranded at Almaty airport.

Air Astana abides by International Air Transport safety guidelines in regards to cancellation or postponement of flights in the event of unfavorable weather conditions. At all times, passenger safety is of the highest importance.

The airport at Almaty is rated as Category 2, in regards to the minimal visibility for flight takeoff (200 m) and landing (350 m). The minimum visibility on the 8th February varied between 50 to 150 m. There was an interval whereby the visibility increased to 200 m and Air Astana used that opportunity to perform four (4) takeoffs.

Air Astana is doing everything possible to ensure that its passengers are provided with meal and drinks. Passengers whose flights were delayed for more than nine hours have been accommodated at hotels, at the company’s expense.

Passengers are given the opportunity to make a re-booking for another day or receive a full refund on their ticket

Unfortunately in Kazakhstan, the autumn-winter period (October to March) is often problematic for aviation due to weather conditions, such as frequent fogs. During the period 15 to 31 January 2007, Air Astana’s punctuality was 70%, of which 49% was due to weather conditions. For comparison, during the period April-June and June-September, 2006 punctuality of Air Astana flights were 89,1%, and 88,5% respectively.

Flights delays are an inconvenience not only to passengers but also the airline due to additional financial costs. That is why Air Astana is taking all possible measures for the best settlement of the situation.

Air Astana shares and understands the inconvenience such disruptions cause to its passengers and therefore would apologies for the current circumstances!

For re-booking or exchange of tickets, passengers should firstly apply to the point where the tickets were purchased.
